Jack Dempsey Smith, 84, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord
on Sunday, August 23, 2009. He joined the Roanoke City Police
Department after graduating from Jefferson High School in 1946.
Smith served in the United States Navy during World War II and the
Pacific Theater. He retired from the police department after 28
years of service. He owned and operated Smiths Traffic Lines until
1987 when he retired. He was a member of the American Legion Post #3
Roanoke and the VFW Post #4491 Craig County. He was past President
of Fraternal Order of Police. He was also a member of Southview
United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife,
Virginia Hicks Smith; sister, Tommie Mae ...
