Article: Berger, federal bench nominee, appears in D.C.

Kanawha Circuit Judge Irene C. Berger encountered little resistance when she appeared before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington on Wednesday as a nominee for a federal judgeship.

At the recommendation of West Virginia's two U.S. senators, Robert C. Byrd and Jay Rockefeller, President Obama nominated Berger to fill the vacancy in the state's Southern District created when U.S. District Judge David A. Faber assumed senior status, a sort of semi-retirement, on Dec. 31.

Rockefeller introduced Berger to the committee's ranking Republican member, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., who chaired the meeting.
