Article: Work under way on Central Avenue span: ; Overpass gets needed repairs; Road crews report brittle concrete, beach ball-sized hole

After years of discussion about the project, the heavily used Central Avenue overpass in South Charleston is finally getting the renovations needed to make it safer for traffic.

The decaying structure is undergoing a complete overhaul. Everything except the piers and abutments that support the bridge will be removed and replaced, said Steve DeBarr, South Charleston city engineer and general manager of the city's sanitary board.

The 248-foot span has served as a gateway to downtown South Charleston since it was completed in 1961. The overpass allows Central Avenue, which passes under Interstate 64, to cross four railroad lines, providing an access point from Kanawha Turnpike to Second Avenue.
