The site used by the oil recycling business at which a man was
injured in an explosion on Tuesday was not on the New Zealand Fire
Service's hazardous site register.
RM Oils Ltd owner Rodger Nicholson's 22-year-old son suffered
serious burns to 30 per cent of his body in the blast, which
occurred while he was cleaning 20-litre drums in a pressurised
kerosene cleaning trough.
He was this morning in a serious but stable condition in
Middlemore Hospital's intensive care unit.
Fire safety investigators believe a spark from a switch being
turned on ignited vapours from the kerosene before enveloping the
man in a brief fireball.
