Article: America's most prolific black sculptor's life explored

When Marie Clementine Barth -Franklin gave crayons and sheets of paper to her infant son, James Richmond Barth , and encouraged him to draw, she didn't know she was planting seeds for artistic excellence and pioneering presentations in bronze.

Dr. Samella Lewis, the internationally renowned artist and cultural historian who became the Claremont Colleges' first black full professor when she joined Scripps College faculty in 1970, said Barth was "born exceptional."

She recently completed a biography and curated a retrospective show on America's most prolific black sculptor. Both book and show are titled "Barth : His Life In Art."
