Article: 125 acres burned in Mias Canyon Fire east of Banning

Fire crews battled a vegetation fire Thursday in Mias Canyon, just east of Banning.

Riverside County Fire Department Capt. Fernando Herrera said the fire was reported at 9:35 a.m. near Mias Canyon and Bluff roads. More than 120 firefighters battled the blaze that had grown to 125 acres. Firefighters had the fire about 35 percent contained.

"Things are looking really good - we have made a lot of progress with our air resources," Herrera said.

Fire crews relied heavily on water-dropping helicopters and air tankers to stop the spread of the fire. Because the fire spread into the hills east of Banning, there were no roads that allowed crews to drive fire engines close enough to the front lines.
