GOVERNMENT conservation body Natural England has joined the
chorus of calls for an "urgent overhaul" of controversial European
rules blamed for destroying the Westcountry's fishing industry.
The European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), which governs every
aspect of a fisherman's working life, has been criticised for poor
management and failure to prevent dwindling fish stocks.
In May, the European Commission called for a wholesale reform of
the current policy, saying nothing else would ensure the survival of
fish stocks and fishermen.
The announcement was welcomed by Westcountry fishermen who hoped
changes would bring an end to laws forcing them to throw dead fish
back into the sea if they ...
