Article: City business leader's regret after Howmet announces jobs threat

A BUSINESS leader has expressed regret that nearly 100 jobs could go at one of the city's biggest employers.

As revealed in yesterday's the Echo, Alcoa Howmet has announced that 95 positions are at risk at its Sowton Industrial Estate works, as the company continues to struggle with a lack of orders.

With 86 redundancies announced in April and a further 70 agency staff laid off in July, this latest round brings the total number potentially affected in less than six months to 251.

The American-owned company said the cuts were necessary to preserve its long-term viability and warned that all departments were involved. A 30-day consultation period is currently under way.
