Article: Cal State East Bay trying to become math, science hub

Cal State East Bay is trying to position itself as a premium training ground for science, engineering and mathematics teachers, while UC Berkeley is backing away from that role.

The Cal State school, which has campuses in Hayward and Concord, plans to raise at least $15 million in private funds to dramatically increase the number of elementary school and secondary school teachers trained in those disciplines.

The goal, said school President Mohammad Qayoumi, is to mold Cal State East Bay into a solution for the nation's shortage of math- and science-trained teachers, which has been noted by everyone from President Barack Obama to Bay Area researchers.
