Article: Hodes searches for clarity on Afghanistan ; War presents rift with White House

There is no question Democratic U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes is a staunch supporter of President Obama. In an interview with the Monitor editorial board this week, Hodes praised the president as a smart politician and a good speaker, who has made the right decisions when staffing key positions and choosing how to proceed on health care.

Yet, on the subject of the war in Afghanistan, a rift opens.

Hodes credits the Obama administration and Defense Secretary Robert Gates for "clear statements recognizing that a military operation alone is insufficient to accomplish every goal in Afghanistan."
