Rosemary Lonewolf made a clay model of a scarlet macaw to present
her idea for an art project. It was a piece of pottery that would
fit in your hand.
For the New Mexico artist, this was a natural.
"I'm a Native American, Pueblo Tewa Indian," Lonewolf says. "My
clay tradition has been passed down from generation to generation,
dating back to cliff-dwelling time."
The project, however, called for a bigger scale than pottery.
Lonewolf was chosen to put her talents to work on a $3.6 million
pedestrian bridge over West McDowell Road in Phoenix. The art
element alone - including design and construction - would cost more
than $750,000.
