The first Operation Homecoming in 1973 was a memorable event for
Ann Louise Burkhardt.
As an Air Force nurse, she participated in the operation to bring
home service personnel who were either wounded or held in North
Vietnamese prisons.
"LuLu spent most of her career as an Air Force nurse aboard C-
141 transport planes bringing back American service personnel
wounded during both the Korean and Vietnam wars," said her brother,
Raymond Burkhardt of Breezewood.
Ann Louise Burkhardt, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel from
Monroeville, died on Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, in the Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center of Greater Pittsburgh in Greensburg. She was
85.
