I BOUGHT MY first car when I was16 years old. I couldn't wait to get my driver's license and head for the open road -- or at least the farthest grocery store to buy milk for my mother. Even if she didn't need any milk.

I saved up my money while working at the old El Rey Theater in Walnut Creek, advancing quickly up the corporate ladder from Popcorn Girl to Candy Counter Girl to Ticket Girl. I was the one sitting in that little booth on Main Street while all the other teenagers with cars "cruised the Main."

Eventually I had enough money to buy the car of my dreams -- an Austin Healy Sprite. I'd wanted a "roadster" ever since I'd read my first Nancy Drew mystery.
