Prepaid wireless-phone service looks better than it used to, and that's not just because of the lousy economy.

Once something marketed to customers at the margin of the business -- the young, the credit risks, the infrequent callers - - these options have begun adopting some attributes of subscription services. Instead of paying for an allotment of minutes to use up over time, many prepaid firms also let you pay a fixed sum each month, often including texting and Web access.
