A St. Louis County jury declined to award damages to a police
officer who claimed injuries from a car accident while on duty.
Joseph Reed, a 40-year-old officer for Pine Lawn, was driving
from the police station to duty on Interstate 70 on June 3, 2003. He
was traveling northbound on Jennings Station Road, north of Bircher
Avenue.
Reed said he observed a pedestrian walking across the road, not
in a crosswalk, in front of his squad car. After he swerved to avoid
the pedestrian, he said he saw a car in front of him, appearing to
be stopped. He could not avoid hitting the back of the car, driven
by Nathan Jordan, an uninsured motorist. Reed clipped the back of
