Article: Never assume: Attorneys surprised Missouri Supreme Court didn't address split

The Missouri Supreme Court has issued a decision that served up two cautionary notes:

Always pay attention to the docket.

And never assume you know why the state's highest court is interested in the case.

The Supreme Court said May 5 that, despite lower court rulings to the contrary, Westport Insurance Corp. is responsible for a $1.4 million judgment from 2006.

The decision reversed a summary judgment granted by the Jackson County Circuit Court that was later affirmed by the Court of Appeals Western District. Both of those courts said the insurance policy in question didn't provide coverage.
