A contributor to a local Internet bulletin board, not known for his bleeding-heart liberal views, felt the way many of us did when we read of the atrocity in Logan County, where a young black woman was tortured for a week, allegedly at the hands of six white people.

He said he first heard the story while he was traveling as part of his job in Virginia.

"It made me embarrassed to think that I live in a state where this happens," he wrote. But he went on to write something more troubling.
