Article: Trademark dispute threatens nonprofit

It's been nearly a year since the National Breast & Ovarian Cancer Connection changed its name, but the fallout from that decision may force the nonprofit organization to shut down.

The Pasadena-based group was first known as the National Breast & Ovarian Cancer Coalition, aiming to educate women about the links between breast and ovarian cancer. But lawyers from the National Breast Cancer Coalition balked, saying the name infringed on their trademark.

So, the NBOCC traded in "Coalition" for "Connection" with the understanding that the NBCC would give them a $5,000 grant in exchange.

But NBCC officials have decided not to award them the grant, which puts the group in dire financial straits. ...
