A NEW frontrunner has emerged in the tussle for top tomato - the
meaty, dark red Abraham Lincoln variety has been found to have the
highest levels of lycopene, an antioxidant thought to prevent
cancer.
The findings come from the Central Tree Crops Research Trust in
Wanganui, a charitable trust which tests dozens of heirloom tomato
varieties each year to find the healthiest. The trust, set up to
research natural plant-based medicines, was founded by Wanganui
accountant and award-winning gardener Mark Christensen and focuses
on finding tomatoes high in lycopene. It contracts Wanganui nursery
Bristol Plants and Seeds to grow the tomatoes and Plant & Food
Research to analyse them.
