Article: The future of Empire Zones in N.Y. State

The complex and controversial Empire Zone tax credit program, originally intended to stimulate business development in specific areas throughout New York State, is scheduled to expire in June 2010.

Businesses certified for the program before June 2010 will continue to receive credits through the entire period for which they are approved.

But critics cite corporate abuses and claim the program has been administered unfairly, with insufficient oversight to measure its value to the communities it was meant to help.
