Article: Botanic garden branches out ; Tower Hill sees expansion turning state into hothouse for garden tours

B OYLSTON - The goal was to spend half a century creating one of the most beautiful and complete European-style gardens in New England.

The Tower Hill Botanic Garden is not even halfway through the 50- year master plan its trustees laid out in 1988, five years after their controversial decision to move from Horticultural Hall in downtown Worcester to 132 acres of Boylston farmland overlooking the Wachusett Reservoir.

But the fruits of their labors will be on display this fall, starting with an open house on Sunday featuring free tours, lectures, flower displays, and birding demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the French Drive property.
