Article: Beech bark disease confirmed in Door County Insect, fungus work together to kill trees

Wisconsin has been hit by a pair of tree-killing invasive pests that team up to attack beech trees.

The Department of Natural Resources announced Wednesday an infestation in Door County known as beech bark disease -- the latest assault of invasive species to afflict the state.

In the most recent case, an insect and fungus work in tandem to kill trees.

Beech bark disease affects only American beech trees. The nearest known location outside of Wisconsin is Norway in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The disease is the second attack by an exotic organism affecting trees in the past year.
