Article: Landlord wins rent battle with pub firm

A PUB landlord is celebrating a landmark High Court victory which has seen the rent sought by owners slashed by over Pounds 20,000.

Les Brooker, 52, who runs the White Horse, in Bristol Road, Hambrook, was taken to court by Enterprise Inns after he refused to agree to a 54 per cent increase in his pub rent.

After a two-year battle, which has cost Mr Brooker and his wife Maxine over Pounds 45,000, a judge in the High Court ruled that he should now pay Pounds 18,000 rent instead of the Pounds 39,000 originally sought by Enterprise.

He said the ruling should give hope to other pub licensees as well as offering a warning to newcomers to the trade.
