The ironies abound. As the BBC reels from more accusations of
being ageist and sexist one of its old warhorses sets sail in its
latest series to plunder once again a surprising amount of viewing
figures.
Last week, New Tricks debuted with eight million viewers, a 34%
share of the audience in an ever more increasingly fractured multi-
channel world.
Amanda Redman plays Sandra Pullman, forced to run a cold case
squad called UCOS (Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad) with retired
cops Gerry (Dennis Waterman) Jack (James Bolam) and the great Alun
Armstrong as the may-have-been-hit-over-the-head-once-too-often-
while-on-duty Brian.
