Article: 'Essentials' to successAthena wiinner credits Heartland program for empowering women

BLOOMINGTON - Pam Westerdahl spends her career helping people break through barriers that keep them from achieving success.

That dedication was recognized Thursday night by the McLean County Chamber of Commerce Women's Division when the group named Westerdahl its 2009 Athena Award winner.

As Heartland Community College director of work force services, Westerdahl leads the campus's Business Essentials programs.

"This is indeed an honor," she said, accepting the award.

She said the recognition truly is for the Essentials program, which has helped many women gain skills needed to land a steady job or go on to earn college degrees.
