Writing from Afghanistan, 1st Lt. Tyler Parten captured life in
the war zone with a mixture of humor, pride and humanity.
On his Facebook.com profile, the 24-year-old Marianna, Ark.,
native described the day elders of a remote mountain village were
honored to receive a visit from his unit, and he joked about
"dehydration headaches" caused by too many hours on patrol with too
little water.
He posted pictures of himself entertaining "kiddos" with his
harmonica, documented a chicken coop he built out of boredom and
spoke warmly of the look on a man's face "when you show his child a
