NHL: Avalanche names Foote team captain

Adam Foote has been named captain of the Colorado Avalanche, taking over a role that's belonged to Joe Sakic since the team moved to Denver in 1995.

Sakic hung up his skates in July, ending his standout 20-year career.

Foote, 38, is an aggressive defenseman who is known for his big hits. He helped the Avalanche to Stanley Cup titles in 1996 and 2001.

Entering his 18th season, Foote has skated in 1,040 career games, tallying 66 goals and 225 assists.

Forwards Milan Hejduk and Paul Stastny were named assistant captains.
