FREMONT -- After being jolted by word that NUMMI will close, this
city is able to bask in some brighter economic news: Xyratex Ltd.
will move 140 workers to a business park here.
The data storage company is moving the employees to Fremont from
existing sites in San Jose and Scotts Valley, Xyratex spokesman Brad
Driver said.
"In this economic climate any new business is good news," said
Lori Taylor, a city economic development manager. "We're always
happy when a business chooses Fremont."
The decision first by General Motors and then by Toyota Motor
Corp. to abandon the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. auto plant
threatens to erase 4,700 jobs and has already rattled Fremont's
