Even in retirement, Jack Sherer appreciated the chance to do the work he loved.

That was architecture, especially work for churches. Sherer helped in the restoration project at his own parish, St. Mary Catholic Church in Lake Church, where he moved in retirement.

His funeral service will be Saturday at the church. Joseph John Sherer died Wednesday. He was 88. He was diagnosed with intestinal cancer last week.

Sherer was born in Dayton, Ohio, growing up in Indianapolis and Hartford before going on to the University of Notre Dame. He was first interested in fine arts.
