A year ago, Ron Dennis was directing Lewis Hamilton to the
Formula One world championship from pit walls in Monte Carlo and Sao
Paulo. Today, after dramatically cutting his ties with the sport,
Dennis is helping direct the future of British manufacturing from
the outskirts of Woking.
Automotive manufacturing in Britain has stalled amid the worst
financial crisis since the 1930s. General Motors' decision to sell a
controlling stake in Vauxhall has left plants at Ellesmere Port and
Luton in limbo, while van maker LDV has collapsed and the demise of
MG Rover is again in the spotlight.
