Article: On Retirement: ; Mother, siblings determined to succeed in college

My mother was the third of four siblings who grew up on a struggling farm in southern Michigan.

Her youngest brother, a widower, is now the sole survivor.

He has returned to a seniors' complex near Chicago after a brief sojourn in Connecticut. Late last year, urged by his sons, he moved East to a seniors' apartment near his older son's home.

It was obvious from a Christmas note that he wasn't happy there. He told me by phone after returning to Illinois that the reason, in part, was the other residents.

"They seemed so elderly," he said.

He chuckled at the obvious question that followed.

"Uncle Martin, how old are you?"

He turns 98 tomorrow.
