Nothing says "late summer" like the smell of tomatoes ripening on
the vine - and the scent of the organic heirloom vines at Maryland
Sunrise Farm in Gambrills is intoxicating.
Once home to the Naval Academy Dairy Farm, the site is popular
today for its autumn corn maze. But Maryland Sunrise Farm is much
more than a maze.
A successful "sustainable organic agriculture" operation
generating $750,000 annually, it farms 854 acres, the largest piece
of certified organic land in the state.
Pointing out that profit margins on grain and produce are higher
than those of conventional growers, farm officials said about 75
percent of the farm's income is derived from the sale of organic
