There's a friendly pace to life in Taupiri that doesn't match the
bustle of bordering State Highway 1. And the locals let Denise
Irvine know they're on to a good thing.

MAINSTREET(S) TAUPIRI
* The names: Te Putu St is named for the great Ngati Mahuta
warrior chief Te Putu who established his pa on the slopes of
Taupiri mountain. The Great South Rd began life in 1843 as a bullock
track linking Auckland with the Waikato. It became an important
supply route, and was sealed in about the 1930s. Nowadays it's
mostly referred to as State Highway 1. Once the Ngaruawahia bypass
