Article: Eagleville School celebrates 160 years

When Benedict Bovee donated a half-acre on the east side of his farm for a school to be built in Eagleville in October 1849, residents battled 10 years about the specific location of the school, almost to the point of splitting District No. 4. Those on the east side of the district wanted the school built below the hill, while those on the west side wanted it built at the top of the hill.

In the meantime, area children were taught in a house rented for $15 a year. Finally, in September 1859, voters at the annual school meeting voted to build the school on the donated land. Within a year, a 24-by-30-foot frame building standing 12 feet high was home to Eagleville ...
