Reach Out and Read, a nonprofit organization that works with doctors and nurses to promote early literacy, named Earl Martin Phalen of Quincy as its new chief executive officer. Phalen will work out of the organization's national headquarters in Boston. As a student at Harvard Law School in 1992, Phalen founded Building Educated Leaders for Life, a nonprofit organization that tutors and mentors schoolchildren who have fallen behind their peers. As CEO of that organization for 15 years, Phalen grew it from a local community service project serving 20 students to a national nonprofit that educates more than 12,000 children annually.
