ANSONIA -- Avid gardener Ernest M. Grant discovered gardening
isn't always easy. "He was an excellent gardener and we had started
a new garden six or seven years ago in his backyard," said a son,
Ernest V. Grant of Ansonia. "We tried to keep the critters out -- we
quickly had groundhogs and deer and squirrels destroying the green
beans, peppers and tomatoes. So we built a fence 3 or 4 feet high,
and that worked pretty well for a year. But then some of the animals
started coming over the fence, so we built a higher fence, around 6
feet. My father said he watched the deer one morning stand next to
