Article: Area jobs, unemployment climb

As the work force in Dubuque County grew, the overall unemployment percentage also increased in August, jumping to 6.5 percent from 6.1 percent in July.

The rate is up from 4.1 percent a year ago.

The work force in the metropolitan statistical area, which includes all of Dubuque County, grew by 300 jobs last month, according to Iowa Workforce Development data released Tuesday.

Nonfarm employment rose from 53,300 in July to 53,600 in August.

The statistics were a bit surprising to Rick Dickinson, who was anticipating either flat work force numbers or a decrease of about 500 jobs in August versus July.
