Islam teaches that the Quran is God's message to humanity,
conveyed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel.
Believers also consider Muhammad's life and sayings, known as
sunnah, to be perfect examples of the Quran's teachings.
Muhammad's companions and followers passed along reports of the
sunnah, and these reports are known as hadith.
As Islam grew in the seventh and eighth centuries, so did the
hadith. In order to preserve the integrity of the sunnah, Muslim
scholars found it necessary to analyze the hadith and determine
which accounts were genuine.
