Russian literature is rich with exploration of fate's cruelty.
One broken heart is usually enough for a good story, but the opera
"Eugene Onegin" goes one better, or rather worse, with two broken
hearts.
Pittsburgh Opera will open its season with Peter Ilyich
Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" on Saturday at the Benedum Center,
Downtown. The show repeats Tuesday and Oct. 2 and 4.
The opera is based on a famous novel in verse by Alexander
Pushkin about Onegin and his best friend Vladimir Lensky, who meet
the sisters Tatiana and Olga. Lensky falls for Olga and Tatiana
falls for Onegin, but Onegin takes a pass. At another encounter with
the sisters, Lensky becomes insanely jealous when Onegin ...
