It was a steamy Saturday in August and I was touring the biggest
community garden I'd ever seen. With more than 150 plots, the Tommy
Thompson community garden in Burlington, Vt., is one of the
highlights of the Intervale Center, a 350-acre preserve in the
floodplain of the Winooski River that also includes small farms and
an innovative composting enterprise. Anyone who would like to see
their town or city do more to promote local farming and gardening
and a better use of land resources would do well to visit the
Intervale for fresh ideas.
But on that particular day, gardeners were noticeably absent. Not
surprising, I thought. Given the heat, they'd most likely be found
dipping themselves ...
