Many lakers I talk with consider September the end of the year's
boating season. Even though they may not winterize until closer to
Thanksgiving, their boats rest idle through those glorious days of
late fall.
That's too bad. Late September, October and even early November,
Ferne and I have found, offer some wonderful boating opportunities
on Smith Mountain Lake.
Yes, days are shorter, and early morning and late evening can be
a bit chilly. Nothing, however, that jeans, a sweatshirt,
windbreaker and cozy wool blanket won't keep at bay.
The upsides of fall boating provide a nice counterbalance to the
cooler weather. Boat traffic is light -- almost non-existent during
