I'm sure that the Winnie-the-Pooh books must have been read to me
as a child, or I must have read them because I read everything I
could get my hands on and the two volumes in their tatty green paper
jackets were certainly to hand. But it is the verses in AA Milne's
When We Were Very Young, in which Pooh first appeared, and Now We
Are Six which impacted more potently on me. 'James James Robertson
Robertson/ Wetherby George Du Pree/ Took great care of his mother/
although he was only three' - how could anyone with a love for the
language not respond to that? I am certain that it was because I had
immersed myself in these books that I became a lifelong writer.
