AIDAN O'Brien's belief in Rip Van Winkle was never one of his best-kept secrets. Johnny Murtagh has never regretted riding him in the Derby - in which he was fourth - and even John Oxx has paid him one of the ultimate compliments by saying the Eclipse, in which Rip Van Winkle chased home his horse of a lifetime, Sea The Stars, was the Derby winner's hardest race of his so far unbeaten season.

Yesterday Rip Van Winkle, officially the second-best horse behind Sea The Stars in Europe, embellished his own hard-fought laurels when he added the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes to the Sussex Stakes he won in July, giving him an outstanding chance of being crowned Europe's Champion Miler for 2009.
