The five world championship matches between Gary Kasparov and
Anatoly Karpov from 1984 to 1990 were the epicentre of the fiercest
and most prolonged rivalry in chess history.
The two have played each other over 180 times, 48 of them in
their first world championship match the "Moscow Marathon", which
got underway on 10 September 1984 and didn't finish until nearly
half a year later when Fide President Florencio Campomanes
notoriously declared it undecided.
Over the years relations between the two have not unnaturally
waxed and waned, but Kasparov was certainly touched that Karpov was
