Article: Capturing the Canal: Port of New Orleans, Gulf Coast look for share of Panama Canal expansion traffic

Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret's prediction that expanding the Panama Canal will not, after all, ignite a bonanza of new shipping containers at Gulf Coast ports is unpopular among some in the industry.

"I don't know exactly where the Louisiana Secretary for Economic Development is coming from," said John Vickerman, a port planning and design specialist working with the Louisiana International Gulf Transfer Terminal, one of the handful of proposals for a cargo transfer hub at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

A report by consulting firm A.T. Kearney, the basis of Moret's opinion, is expected to go public next month. Vickerman said he has not seen the final report ...
