With doom and gloom dominating the national news on the economic
and employment fronts, recent reports that nearly 20 percent of
Topeka area employers were prepared to hire and 64 percent planned
to maintain staffing at current levels were as welcome here as a day
without rain.
Granted, some economists say the nation is nearing a turning
point in the recession that has had the country in its grip since
last year, but real evidence has been scant. Unemployment continues
to rise nationally and hit 9.7 percent in August as 570,000 recently
laid-off workers filed for unemployment during the last week of that
month.
Unemployment in Topeka is up, too, and hit 6.2 percent in June,
compared with 4.4 ...
