Just as five hot air balloon pilots were about to give up on their morning flight Thursday, a break in the weather allowed two pilots to take to the skies.

Crews worked quickly Thursday morning to prepare the hot air balloons.

Joel Sturdevant, of Lee's Summit, Mo., launched his red, white and blue RE/MAX balloon and sailed west over the city from Shunga Glen Park at S.W. 23rd and Washburn.

Roy Caton, of St. Louis, piloted the yellow, blue and white United Van Lines balloon.

The event was to help raise awareness about the 34th annual Great Plains Balloon Club's Huff 'n Puff rally, which is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Lake Shawnee. Balloons will ...
