Bonuses for university leaders questioned

IOWA CITY - Several Iowa lawmakers are raising questions about bonuses being made available to the state's regent university presidents during a tough budget year.

Republican Rep. Jeff Kaufmann said the discussion of bonuses by the regents indicates they are out of touch with the taxpayers who fund them. He was joined by Windsor Heights Rep. Chris Hagenow and Alden Rep. Annette Sweeney, both Republicans.

Sweeney also questioned whether tuition increases are needed. The regents will hear 2010-2011 tuition recommendations in October.
