Maryland businesses will pay at least triple the current rates
for unemployment insurance taxes beginning Jan. 1, the Department of
Labor, Licensing and Regulation confirmed Thursday.
Thomas E. Perez, outgoing secretary of the department, said the
drastic decrease in the state's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund
means that the fee employers pay will increase to the highest level
allowed in the tax-rate structure.
Minimum rates in 2010 will be $187 per employee, up from $51 an
employee in 2009. About 60 percent of employers pay the minimum, but
rates increase depending on the number of unemployment claims filed
against a business in the last three years.
