When Allison Sullivan started feeling sick this spring, she
thought nothing of taking Extra Strength Tylenol to get through the
misery of what seemed like a stomach flu. She was used to taking the
drug for migraines, and never thought of it as a serious medication.
Days later, she was so disoriented she could not remember how
many pills she had taken, and her liver was failing because she had
overdosed on acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol. In
pain and near death, Sullivan was taken to Massachusetts General
Hospital and put on the liver transplant list. Her mother and sister
flew in from the West Coast, fearing she would not live.
